A DBS check is a criminal record check issued by the Disclosure and Barring Service for roles in England and Wales, with Disclosure Scotland and AccessNI covering Scotland and Northern Ireland. It comes in basic, standard and enhanced levels, with enhanced checks and barred-list checks reserved for regulated activity such as work with children or vulnerable adults. Employers can only request the level the role legally qualifies for, and many use the Update Service to keep certificates current.
