A fixed shift is a working pattern where the employee works the same times on the same days each week, such as permanent nights or a Monday-to-Friday early. Fixed shifts give staff predictability and make childcare and second commitments easier to plan around, which is why many workers accept less popular hours in exchange for them. The trade-off for employers is less flexibility to flex coverage against demand.
