Split shiftWhat it means, in plain English

A split shift is a working day divided into two or more separate blocks with a long unpaid gap in between, for example a lunchtime and an evening service in hospitality. The gap is normally unpaid, but travel and total hours still count towards Working Time Regulations limits and rest requirements. Split shifts are lawful in the UK but unpopular with staff, so many employers limit how often they are rostered.
