TOILWhat it means, in plain English

TOIL, or time off in lieu, is paid time off granted instead of payment for extra hours worked. There is no specific UK statute governing TOIL, so the rules on how it is earned, approved and used come from the employment contract or workplace policy. Employers usually set a deadline for taking TOIL and must ensure that banking hours does not push average pay below the National Minimum Wage.
